STROLLERS REACH TWO TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINALS
HARTSHILL Strollers reached two semi-finals in the Chesterton Crusaders Walking Football Tournament in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Sunday, April 24.
Both the club’s A and B teams went through unbeaten in the group stages of the competition – and each won a match in the knock-out stages.
But there was to be no silverware for either of them, going out on slender margins.
Our A team were the first in action, drawing 0-0 against Walsall A and then recording goal-less draws v. both Cheadle and Man City.
Because of other results in the group, the results meant that Hartshill Strollers A went through to the Trophy Knock Out where they overcame Active A 1-0, Eddie Tromans scoring.
But they went out in the semi-final to Stoke, 0-1.
Meanwhile, our B team held Active B and Stoke B to goal-less draws – and beat Walsall B 1-0. John Cooper hitting the net.
Despite a better showing than the A team (!), the B team went into the Plate Knock Out where they went through on penalties against Rugeley before going out in the semis v. Beaconside, also on spot kicks.
Hartshill Strollers assistant manager Bob Haywood: “Both our teams acquitted themselves well in the tournament in which 16 teams took part”
“It was an extremely well-run competition and we have congratulated Chesterton Crusaders on putting on such a showcase tournament”
“The game format – seven-minute halves – meant that draws (especially goal-less draws) were the most likely result, as proved to be the case”
“Both our teams were disappointed not to have gone further in the competition but it was a good days sport and we have learned a lot from it”
“It was great to see Andy Cotterill back in competitive matches. The magic is still there.”
