FLEETWOOD TOURNAMENT for 60+

Sunday August 6th

Having spent the night at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Southport and feasted on a hearty breakfast we made our way over the Ribble and on to the Lancashire coast arriving around midday on Fleetwood seafront, where the players took in the sea air and had pre match drinks next to the departure point for the Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry, before making our way to Fleetwood's excellent football facility

Hartshill Strollers entered a team in the Fleetwood tournement and were put in a group with 3 football league affiliated teams AFC Blackpool, Manchester City and Sheffield United. We drew Blackpool 0-0, beat Man City 2-1, with goals from Richard Delahaye and John Cooper, and lost to Sheffield 0-2 and although we finished level on points with Man City, we ended up finishing 3rd and so had to go into the Plate competition. Our opponents were Preston North End and we beat them 3-1 on penalties after their second penalty was briliantly saved by Bernard and our penalties were scored by Richard, John Green and John Cooper. In the Plate final we played Watts Crosby from Liverpool and won 5-0, all goals scored by John Cooper.

In the main Final Sheffield United beat Manchester City, so us and Sheffield were the only teams to beat Man City.

The team taking part was: Bernard Bustin, Les Evans, Barry Geyton, John Green, Richard Delahaye and John Cooper with the help of four Subs.

It was a really welcoming atmosphere with the games played hard but fair and well controlled by the officials. The players of Hartshill made many friends and good contacts for the future.
