Rochdale Tournament 10th September 2017
Having arrived in good time at the Heywood Sports Village on the outskirts of Rochdale, Hartshill Strollers were asked by a a player if he could help us out. The concensus amongst our group was that we would be happy to oblige. This was the first tournament to ensure that all players were registered and have proof of age, which we were really happy with. In Paul's introduction he mentioned that were we reigning WFU National champions and thanked us for making the effort to attend, which drew a round of applause from everyone who attended. All games were to be 15 minutes in duration.
Our first group game against Vintage Celtic ended 0-0. The second game against Tameside Striders was won 1-0 with a goal from John Cooper, although we ended the game with 5 players after Steve Nicholls was Blue Carded for a last gasp challenge. Games 3 and 4 saw us draw 0-0- with both Rochdale AFC Strollers and Wakefield Wanderers Blue. In the final game of the group Hartshill went behind for the one and only time, however after some great play from Tom, hitting the post, John Cooper slotted home the equaliser and the game finished 1-1. We were undefeated on the day having won 1, drew 4, goals for 2, against 1.
After a break for food the semi finals were due to take place, but were abandoned due to torrential rain and the pitches were flooded.
Everyone agreed that this was the best event we have attended, the games were actually walking football and the referees were consistant and fair to all teams.
A special thanks should go to Paul and Bill who organised the event and invited us to return in November to take part in their Over 65 tournament.
The squad was: Dave Seddon, Les Evans, Bernard Bustin, Steve Nicholls, Richard Delahaye, John Cooper, Tom Wallace and Barry Geyton
